The scenery’s so big, there’s hardly room for a city. But in Tasmania, we’re used to that kind of challenge. Between a mountain and a harbour fit for a masterpiece, we’ve built a base camp like no other.
Hobart is the gateway to so much fun. It’s as if the landscape inspired the creation of a city equal to its promise – a hub of creativity, fine restaurants and luxurious accommodation close to all that’s intriguing about the south.
You’ll see it regularly down at the docks. On one side of the buzzing, bustling Salamanca Market, galleries display works by contemporary local designers.
Yet just across the road, square-riggers recall our maritime heritage and boatbuilding traditions still practised today.
If you can drag your eyes away from the views as you drive up Mt Wellington just 20 minutes from town, you’ll see the crystal-clear streams that must have inspired the original owner of Cascade Brewery. Locals still stop by the roadside to fill their flasks – that’s purity for you!
The Wellington Range has many faces, as you’ll discover when you drive south through the Huon Valley. Here it’s called Sleeping Beauty, and you don’t have to be Walt Disney to see why.
Beyond Kettering and Huonville you’ll discover providores, vineyards, cheeseries, an AirWalk, caves and a thermal pool, before arriving at the end of the road, literally - the entrance to the Southwest National Park is as far south as you can drive in Australia.
To the south-east of Hobart are the wild cliffs and haunting tales of the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur Historic Site, to the west the waterfalls, tarns and forests of Mt Field National Park.
Make Hobart your base camp for a kaleidoscope of experiences in Tasmania’s colourful south.
