Find out why the distinctive sounds, sights and tastes of Tasmania have launched our island state into New York Times' list of 44 Places To Go in 2009; Australia's only destination to make the exclusive list.
In the company of picks such as Rome, Galapagos and Hawaii, Tasmania is praised as having some of the most delectable pinot noirs, chardonnays and sparkling wines. This distant island is also home to world-class music festivals, fine regional produce and World Heritage Wilderness waiting to be discovered.
With the summer sunshine comes a host of colourful Tasmanian events. Join in festivities at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival beginning February 6, a four-day celebration of Tasmania's maritime culture. More than 500 wooden boats converge on Hobart's historic waterfront as part of the biggest maritime event of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
On February 13, head to the northern city of Launceston as it comes alive during Festivale, three days of fine food, wine, arts and entertainment alfresco-style in Launceston's City Park. Over 65 stalls bring cellar doors and regional culinary delights to central Launceston.
